We're starting to put together a campaign to raise money and art supplies for area schools, and with the recent budget cuts its more important than ever:
"The latest round of cuts to the Arizona Commission on the Arts will mean less money for museums, theaters and orchestras and less arts education in schools.
But some leaders in the arts community are not as concerned about the fiscal impact of reducing the state's annual appropriation from $665,000 to zero than about the intangible impact.
"The big thing is the statement this makes," Phoenix Art Museum director Jim Ballinger said. "When you zero something out, either intentionally or unintentionally, the statement that that carries with it from the Legislature is that arts and culture are not important to the people of Arizona. . . .
